In April 2022, I finally said goodbye to ‘Extend PR and Marketing’ which was the consultancy I started almost 11 years ago. I’ve kept the same trading entity, but I’ve taken the plunge – changed the name and changed the focus.

As with any goodbye, it’s important to spend time reflecting on all those moments that have made up part of this journey. As part of this, I enjoyed remembering and tuning myself into just WHY I started that business and all it has achieved. I cannot believe the journey Extend has taken me on and what a blessing it has been, even in the tough times, to have a way of working that has been built around me.
I started my business when I felt I had no options left at work. I ran out of road. Staying in a job that was making me a nightmare to be around and utterly miserable. No route to progress. No way to get my voice heard. No way to ‘be the perfect mum’ and no available route into a director level role that challenged me.
My driver was to survive. To create my own way. To prove to myself that it was possible to have the right balance of ambition, enjoyment and parenting. But mainly just to survive. And to grow a business that could create part-time jobs for other working mums – to show that businesses can operate perfectly well with part-time working!
Extend PR was built and grown around:
• My family
• My talents, experience and ways of working
• The contacts and connections I have, which somehow sustained me for all this time…WITHOUT very much ‘marketing’ – no freebies, funnels, free downloads, and not one marketing email sent! (The anti-marketing marketer lol!)
• What I wanted to use my energy for and having the power to say no
NOW I LOOK BACK AND SEE THAT THIS LITTLE BUSINESS HAS PROVIDED ME WITH
• The opportunity to be ambitious with my career goals whilst working part time to be with my children while they were growing up.
• Opportunities I never would have thought of, from running workshops for a world-leading business school, to speaking as a keynote speaker at big events and seeing clients win BIG at awards ceremonies
• Just THE BEST CLIENTS!!! Oh my gosh, I’ve been so lucky with my clients! Sure, I’ve had the odd tricky encounter but honestly, my clients have just been the best, and so loyal!
• Friendships – I’ve also been blessed with some brilliant team members and fellow freelancers who have been fundamental to my clients and to me. Some have carried me when I wasn’t able to carry the business myself.
And some of my clients have gone on to be good friends who are my biggest champions (and me theirs – it works both ways!)
Tonight I’m celebrating and saying thank you to all that ‘Extend’ has done for me, everyone who has been part of that journey and all the wonderful clients, including my existing ones who are making the transition with me.
?? Goodbye and THANK YOU, my little PR and marketing agency.
